Although the Club is primarily for social activities it has also played a key role in safeguarding archives and artefacts.

When the ship paid off in 1974 the Club, led by the then President, Captain David Smith RD RN (42-44), played a leading role in saving major artefacts. Foremost amongst these were:

  • The figurehead now at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth.
  • The wheel, bell and model which are the centrepiece of the Museum Of The RN at Portsmouth.

The Club was instrumental in arranging for the Merseyside Maritime Museum to hold, conserve and make available Conway‘s document archive.
